Union: Showboat Atlantic City Notice of Closure

The Showboat in Atlantic City is expected to give notice to union workers that the casino will close in 60 days, according to The Press of Atlantic City. Citing Unite HERE Local 54 sources, the local casino employee union was aware that Showboat expected to hand out these WARN notices on Friday, June 27, 2026.

Showboat is owned by Caesars Entertainment. It was acquired in 1998. Caesars Entertainment owns three other Atlantic City properties – Bally's, Caesars, and Harrah's. These three resorts are not affected by the announcement.

Caesars Entertainment is an estimated $23 billion in debt and has been looking at ways to cut costs. Its Harrah's Tunica resort, the largest in the Mississippi casino town, was shuttered on June 2.

Rumors that made Showboat the subject of a potential sale have circled Atlantic City for years.
Atlantic City has suffered gaming revenue declines for each of the past six years. This year appears that it will be no different, even with the help of online gaming.

New Jersey hoped to create a draw with sports betting. In 2012, the state legalized the practice at Atlantic City casinos and state racetracks. The Justice Department and five sports leagues challenged the legality of New Jersey's law and prevailed in federal court. A new bill that will simply repeal the law as opposed to outright legalizing it has passed the New Jersey House and Senate in its first day of introduction. It is awaiting Governor Chris Christie's signature to go into law.

The new law follows a legal argument taken by opponents during the federal court battle that claims New Jersey is free to simply decriminalize sports betting. It is unknown if the sports leagues and Justice Department will challenge the latest effort should Governor Christie sign the bill into law.
